SOUTHPORT BRICKS
Trains began rolling in Southport by 1848 and a few years later had its own proper station in Chapel Street. A connection to Liverpool and Manchester was crucial to the town and brought lots of visitors to the area along with their hard earned money.
By 1900 Electric Trams came to Southport and operated from the Canning Road depot until 1934. Ten years earlier the town had purchased its first Bus and by 1950 the fleet had grown to over 75.
Two airfields were active in the town in the early 1900's. Hesketh Park Aerodrome was used as a testing site from 1910 and Birkdale Sands opened in 1920.
This section will move through the times along with the changing face of transport in Southport.
